This Saturday will see us host the second and final race in the Autumn Big Bay series. In addition to the quarterly sub-series, an overall result for the Big Bay series will accumulate throughout the year.
The race starts at 1:30pm and conditions are expected to be fresh, with breezes around 15 knots on Pioneer Bay and a good high tide to launch on.
The Whitsunday Sailing Club is calling for the local community to get behind Airlie Beach Race Week to ensure its survival. The event is going ahead this year without a major sponsor after the demise of Meridien Marinas as naming rights sponsor. The Whitsunday Sailing Club is now looking for additional small sponsors to support the event.
This Saturday is the second in our 2012 sprint series. We enjoyed a fair turnout for the first set of races back in March, and we're looking forward to a similar turnout tomorrow.
We're expecting fresh breezes and hoping for a similarly fine and sunny day to today's (Friday) weather. Racing starts at 1:30, so as usual we suggest arriving an hour to an hour and a half before in order to allow time for rigging and getting out to the start area.
Five Whitsunday Sailing Club boats left Airlie Beach on Good Friday for the 5 hour cruise up to Bowen in preparation of the Easter Regatta hosted by the North Queensland Cruising Yacht Club.
The three race regatta forms part of the Inter-Club Championship with the Home Hardware Series, and 15 boats were ready to race for the club trophy, with Breakaway, Sandpiper, Twister, Anthea and Wobbly Boot representing the sailing club.
One of the special qualities of Airlie Beach is the overall party atmosphere of the town and one the highlights of their event calendar is the Great Whitsunday Fun Race. Hosted by the Whitsunday Sailing Club, this year the race has been moved to the 18 August, the weekend after Airlie Beach Race Week, to continue the fun and give visiting yachties another excuse to stay on in town and party. Not only is it a great day of racing but the after-party has created some legendary stories of its own!
The Whitsunday Sailing Club is excited to announce the arrival of Head Chef Ben Monteiro along with a revised and revitalised menu designed to please locals and visitors alike.
The new Committee of the Whitsunday Sailing Club was elected in September 2011 and they have been working hard since then to make some significant changes and improvements at the Club for both members and visitors. One of these jobs is now being realised with new signage being installed last week.
