Saturday morning's early Southerly breeze filling in the bay for the 9am start seemed a good sign for the 9 boats lining up to take on the XXXX Round Whitsundays race.

The steady 12 to 15 knots of wind carried the fleet promptly up to the first rounding mark of Dent Island. While the air lightening off it held the angle for most boats to enjoy a shy kite reach across to Workington Island and making the half way mark in good time.

As the boats beared away for the deep spinnaker run to Hayman Island the forecast softening of the wind began to take its toll on boat speed.

Only the first three boats had made Dolphin Point by sunset and Treasure VIII (Clay Bauman) sailed into the hole of no wind as Twister (Kevin Fogarty) caught up and sailed around.

The darkness bought less puff and Reignition (Charles Wallis) crossed the finish line at 7:32 pm for line Honours followed slowly by the rest of the fleet that radioed one by one that they were safely back in the bay approaching the end only to find a South Westerly right on their nose.

Making tacking into the bay a timely exercise after a long day with the last boat (Masquerade) Tom Vujasinovic finishing at 11:41pm.
