The Whitsunday Sailing Club has announced it will be the host club of the 2014 Queensland Optimist Championships in June.

With a long history of hosting state, national, international and world sailing titles, the sailing club is looking forward to welcoming a large fleet of Optimist sailors to the Whitsunday region for the event.

Local sailors were also given the chance to improve their skills before the championships at the Whitsunday Sail Training Camp, conducted by top tier sailing coach Danny Fuller, on the weekend.

The Optimist Championships are open to any registered optimist sailor who wishes to compete.

It will include an Open Fleet for experienced sailors and a Green Fleet for less experienced sailors.

Whitsunday Sailing Club Commodore Jim Hayes said the club is excited to host the large fleet of boats from June 27-29.

“Especially considering the steadily increasing numbers of Opti sailors in the Whitsunday area,” Mr Hayes said.

“It’s a real pleasure to hold events like this at our club, and everyone who competes enjoys sailing in the Whitsundays and visiting Airlie Beach,” he said.

“Whitsunday Sailing Club is renowned for putting on great racing in this iconic sailing destination.”
