Once again , the Whitsunday SAiling Club will conduct the annual Sail Airlie regatta over the Easter period, 14 - 17 April 2017.  Last year, Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Sailing Club was host to over 300 visiting competitors and supporters for the 2016 Sail Airlie regatta.  With over 70 boats competing in six divisions, the event attracted entrants from Tinnaroo and Mission Beach down to Brisbane.  Competition over 3 course areas ranged from the high performance 29’er, through to Lasers and down to a tackers fleet, with competitors ranging from as young as 7 years of age ranging up to competitors in their 60’s.

The Laser class held the North Queensland championship as part of the regatta, with the overall title being taken by Michael Wilson (BSS), who also took out the full rig division. In the Radial Rigs, it was Miranda Wilson, while local young gun Hamish Swain took out the 4.7 rig division.  The regatta also included a leg of the North Queensland Sabot series, which includes regattas from a number of venues along the coast, with Talia Bulstrode from Tinneroo making the long trip worthwhile.

Other classes which competed in the event included Tasar, Flying 11, Nacra F18, A Class, 125, Optimist.

With the opportunity to camp at the venue, competitors agreed that this was the Best ever Sail Airlie Regatta.  Planning is already underway for Easter 2017.

The regatta is open to all classes of Off the Beach racing dinghies and catamarans, and also incorporates the North Queensland Laser Championship and the North Queensland Sabot travelling series.  Other classes may be split into divisions, with results calculated by class yardstick, subject to entries.

Up to 7 races are scheduled for each division, with an invitation race on Friday, followed by racing on Saturday and Sunday.
