1971
The Whitsunday Sailing Club was
formed with all club activities including training schools
and regattas operating from the beach shelter shed.
1976
A lease was granted for the purpose of erecting a cubhouse.
Upon the granting of a lease, members began the task of clearing
the rocky foreshore to provide a tidal sanded launching area
to the northwest of the lease.
1979
The first stage of the persent clubhouse was built to meet
the needs of local off-the-beach sailors, sailing sabots,
lasers, skiffs, supasabs, 125's and catamarans. The club was
completed using mainly member's labour.
1983
The offshore fleet was formed and regular offshore racing
began.
Clubhouse stage 2, a large
balcony,
ablution facilities and undercover boat storage area was completed.
1984
The club made application to extend its lease boundaries to
provide for further launching areas and foreshore for hardstanding
and rigging for the rapidly expanding offshore fleet and a
Special Lease was granted in 1986.
1991
The clubhouse was extended and opened on July 13th 1991 by
Member for Whitsunday, Lorraine Bird, MLA.
1992
The kitchen facilities were completed and upgraded.
1993
A $20,000 training facility and increased boat storage area
was opened by Member for Whitsunday, Lorraine Bird, MLA.
1994
As a result of previous discussions with the Department of Lands
in which W.S.C. expressed an interest in aquiring the Sailport
site, the W.S.C. was invited to apply for a permit to occupy
the site for a marina development.
1995
Club received preferred developer status for proposed marina.
1996
A State Government Grant of $250,000 to complete WSC's foreshore
reclamation project, giving the club concrete launching ramps
for trailer sailors, improved facilities for all off-beach
fleets and a priceless landscaped waterfront area.
1997
Marina Committee's continued lobbying of State National Liberal
Coalition and Labor party to allocate Impact Assessment Study
funding for Port of Airlie Marina.
1998
Downstairs abltion blocks renovated. Foreshore reclamtion
completed including boat ramp. Landscaping of reclation commenced
May.
29th April Premier, Hon Ron Borbidge announced that the Qld
State Government would allocate funding for Impact Assessment
Study for Port of Airlie Marina, to be repaid by developer.
The Coalition Government made funding available to complete
the Marina I.A.S. The Queensland Government has initially
committed up to $2 million to secure the marina rock source
and to assist with marina development costs. Training - Memorandum
of Agreement between Whitsunday College of Tafe to provide
cooperative training ventures between Industry & educational
institutions related to Maritime Training.
Host club for National Moth Titles and Hobie 16 World Titles.
